ALCHEMY: A Memoir is an account of spiritual transformation that took place over a twenty year period. The story begins with planting roses, my son’s birth, and a series of oddly prophetic dreams. In 1990, against all common sense, I quit my job as an acquisitions editor and set out to discover who I really was. This decision led to a journey through the mythic and prosaic, including arguments with my husband over chores and responsibilities, meetings with a close-knit group of women writers called The Feminati, an evolving friendship with a psychic clairvoyant, a numinous meeting with an Indian saint, buying a home in a Tuscan village, an ongoing dream journal, twelve years of yoga meditation, and eventually learning to live in each moment and experience, as Joseph Campbell says in the book’s opening scene, the rapture of being alive.
Parallels between my life and the story of Psyche and Eros and other mythological events are woven through the narrative, as well as dream scenes and descriptions of the stages of spiritual alchemy.
