What Eros Wanted Psyche to Know Before She Went to the Underworld

Do not answer the telephone.
The hourglass empties in three hours’ time;
in the first three minutes, your destiny is defined.

Do not try to race the wind.
Do not volunteer for the PTA
or go shopping
or put the closets in order;
you might as well offer your head to Cerberus.

You must begin with failure.

To paint with her dark brush,
to fill the night sky with a thousand stars,
you must give up your golden throne.

You are a pauper with two coins
and two barley cakes
trudging into hell
because your life depends on it—
you will see.
For now, keep your head down and
save your coins to pay the ferryman.
Feed the three-headed hound
with the biscuits and don’t look back.
